Meet the Artist - Laura Lienhard

LAURA LIENHARD founded her jewelry studio after a successful twenty-year career in textile design, turning a highly trained eye from the patterns of the loom toward explorations in metal. Investigations into the interplay of pattern and structure define her work. Elements in her jewelry are derived from nature’s forms and textures as well as its surprises. Spontaneity and instinct lead to unique, often kinetic connections of hand fabricated elements that harken back to her textile roots.

SHIBUMI GALLERY is pleased to present Transformative Ground featuring artist Curtis Arima. Curtis is not only a distinguished metal artist, but also Chair of the Jewelry & Metal Arts Program at California College of the Arts.

Curtis is known for his forged work, which focuses on botanical forms, nature’s beauty and fragility. With this show, Curtis explores the naissance of inspiration and creativity. Jewelry can identify cultures, represent spiritual beliefs, and celebrate personal bonds. Much of his practice delves into the nature of transformation, both literally and metaphorically. Curtis creates works of unusual beauty by deconstructing and reconstructing pieces of jewelry, creating compositions that resemble a snapshot in time - referencing both archaeology and geology.

SHIBUMI GALLERY presents WILDHEART - new work by Lisa Ziff. Some people are drawn into the wilderness, to the margins of the world, enchanted by the diversity and unbounded creativity of natural forces. Lisa Ziff is one such explorer. She’s a curious and keen observer of the living and the physical worlds whose work evokes a variety of geological, zoological and botanical forms: tentacles, spines, and shells; buds, carapaces and clouds; petals, pebbles and watercourses. Working from a unique texture or a microscopic close-up, Lisa carves magical worlds inspired by nature in her jewelry. The wild--the natural world--we feel is the most powerful inspiration anyone can pull from.

Jewelry is often given as a symbol of love, and we encourage and appreciate the practice of honoring someone dear. We know our clients are unique in their vision and create genuine memories in whatever way feels right to them. Valentine’s Day is an occasion to mark with authentic gifts, not Hallmark sentiments, so we offer you the subtle beauty of Lisa’s work, hand-carved and cast in 10k gold, at an irresistible price.

OHANA - Hoops + Bangles, Paintings by Cathy Liu

  • 1816 Fourth Street Berkeley, CA, 94710 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

SHIBUMI GALLERY presents OHANA a summer show to feed our souls. We are all feeling ready for a true summer; beaches, sunsets and some serious relaxation after last year. But are we really ready to travel and adventure out into the world again? The past year has made us dream of the carefree life and the innocence we once had about health and loved ones. We may value our pods more and may have a new sense of who our true 'ohana' is after 2020.

We have always loved the Hawaiian term ohana because its meaning of 'family' extends outside of the people you are related to. The idea that anyone can become family is one of the strikingly beautiful aspects of Hawaiian culture.

For summer, we have curated Hoops + Bangles from our Shibumi artists. It's the carefree jewelry that you can easily put on, layer and never take off. Who doesn’t love a new hoop or a bangle to wear all summer long.

Alongside the jewelry, Shibumi will also feature artwork and paintings by Cathy Liu. Her art pieces convey 'malama pono' another Hawaiian term which translates to "take care". However, the deeper meaning is take care of your light (soul) which she describes as the intent of all her work.

So take a short journey to visit our summer show at Shibumi. Or come by to pick out something to take with you on your summer travels.

We put together a showcase featuring hand carved intaglios by Ryan Bowen,
alongside other men's jewelry.

June 12 - July 30th

RYAN BOWEN is our new featured artist. He is a gem carver and sculpture based in Sydney, Australia.

"I’ve had a long lived fascination with jewelry design and in the past few years, concentrated solely on gemstone intaglio. I'm fully self taught and trying to bring a modern feel to the traditional art form that is seal making. Incorporating unusual imagery that suits my quirky personality and interests is my main goal, while also preserving the feel and integrity of this ancient art."

Ring shanks designed by April Higashi. Commission a drawing of your choice or choose one of the loose intaglios on display to be made into a custom piece.

SHIBUMI GALLERY presents FLORA & FAUNA, opening March 20, 2021, to welcome the first day of Spring.

Nature has always been a distinct and driving source of inspiration for many of the artists who show with Shibumi Gallery. And during the pandemic not only have we appreciated the grounding force of nature and its beauty and tranquility, but the outdoors has also offered us some of the only safe spaces for connecting with family, friends and loved ones.

With spring comes new beginnings and as nature starts its quiet determination to bud forth again, Flora & Fauna pays homage not only to nature for its ability to inspire, but also for the shelter and haven it has offered us during these times.

Please visit us in the gallery through the end of April to see this inspiring show which bridges the genres of jewelry, sculpture and painting. More will be posted online in the following weeks.

COLOR, LIGHT, LUSTER - Marian Maurer + Black Market Pearls

  • 1402 5th Street Berkeley, Ca 94710 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Shibumi Gallery is pleased to announce Color, Light, Luster.

The past year has found us all clinging to small moments of 'normalcy': a walk with a friend, a delicious meal, a movie to cozy up with or time spent with loved ones in our pods. These occasions that we once took for granted have now become special, memorable and personal - taking on a new significance.

Color, Light, Luster is a show to remind us that beauty, like these small moments, is something that can be easily overlooked, but found every day in unexpected places and appreciated in special ways. The pieces for this show were curated with loved ones in mind as Valentine's Day nears. Perhaps a favorite color or stone, or a piece to be worn every day can serve not only as an expression of love but also a reminder that beauty is never far.

The giving of jewelry is an intimate gesture whether gifted to a loved one, a friend or even oneself. What once may have been ‘normal’ is perhaps now a bright spot to be appreciated, remembered and celebrated.

The Silk Road; Tales of the Exotic

The Silk Road; Tales of the Exotic

SHIBUMI GALLERY presents The Silk Road; Tales of the Exotic.

Our 15th Annual Holiday group show is inspired by the period of trade between 130 BCE and up to the 19th century, when the acquisition of exotic materials required exhaustive travel, by horse or camel, across continents. Merchants would set forth for months of journeying in search of lapis, coral, jade, pearls, silk, spices, diamonds, sapphires, beryl, amber, rubies, camel bone, ceramics, embroidery, tiles, sand and woven textiles to acquire, sell, and trade. While The Silk Roads were an ancient network of trade routes between the East and West they disseminated more than just goods. These routes also led to and inspired exchanges of ideas, philosophies, literature, technologies and traditions of arts and crafts.

Today exotic goods are just an Internet search away. And while cars and planes have replaced horses and camels, dealers still travel to far off destinations in search of gems and new materials. While these gems and materials are more accessible than ever, each piece still has the unique story of its place of origin that often gets overlooked without the fascinating and evocative tales of travel to accompany them.

Please join us as we pay homage to The Silk Road, which continues to stir the imagination with its mysterious and romantic notions of new cultures, adventures and beautiful and unusual finds. Yet perhaps in the tradition of The Silk Roads’ greatest legacy, we invite you to our opening Saturday, 07 December, 5-9pm not only to peruse the jewelry and goods, but also to gather, perhaps make a new acquaintance, exchange an exotic tale or simply share an idea or two.

FLUX Nan Collymore - Jewelry & Artwork + Eric Silva - Jewelry

SHIBUMI GALLERY is pleased to announce Flux featuring works by artists Nan Collymore and Eric Silva.

Both artists’ aesthetic embraces an openness to nature and an appreciation of the irregularities of form. Their jewelry shares unique rough-hued qualities that can be seen in the textures, stones and silhouettes of each piece. The work, while balanced, refined and artful, retains an organic feel. With their distinctive sculptural shapes and one can almost imagine them as small maquettes for larger-scale art pieces. Alongside her jewelry, Nan Collymore will also be showing her ethereal stitched and crocheted wall sculptures made from yarn and wire.

NAN COLLYMORE primarily focuses on materiality and it's relationship to the body. Touch and affect play an important role in how she approaches each of her pieces. With this body of work Nan will show some of her new 14k gold pieces jewelry alongside her brass and textile work.

ERIC SILVA is a Los Angeles based designer. His work combines both natural and industrial materials in a small, thoughtfully constructed space. His designs highlight the often overlooked details found in daily life. He believes in the simplicity and integrity of the materials themselves, and for those who own his work, Eric affirms that a unique bond is forged between artist and owner. Silva is best known for his works with hand-carved shed antler and hand-made chains.
